The whole web.
A fraction of the weight.

Mote is the browser built around it. Native, open source, and under 6 MB.

Every Mac comes with a great web engine.

Mote gives it a browser that feels at home.

Ads and trackers never make it to the page.

Tabs you left behind wait quietly until you need them.

Your passwords stay in your keychain.

No account. Nothing leaves your Mac.

Just you and the page.

Everything you'd reach for. Already inside.

  • Blocked before it loads.

Ads and trackers are stopped before the page starts to draw.

  • Hide it once.

Click any part of a page to hide it. It stays hidden next time, too.

  • Bring your passwords.

Import them from Chrome, Arc, Dia, Brave or Edge in one click. They live in your keychain.

  • Your extensions, too.

Chrome extensions run in Mote, on the engine Safari uses.

  • Tabs that sleep.

Restored tabs wait until you click them, so your Mac doesn't have to.

The whole browser. About the size of a photo.

Mote uses the WebKit engine that's already part of macOS. The others each bring their own.

Area to scale with each app's installed size on Apple silicon, September 2026: Mote 0.1, Firefox 156, Chrome 154, Edge 154, Dia 1.50.

What you browse stays on your Mac.

One question a day

Besides the pages you open and their icons, the only thing Mote asks the internet is whether there's an update.

Read every line.

Mote is free and licensed under the GPL. Check our work, or help build it.

Design.swift
/// Shared animations: `glide` for movement between positions, `settle` for/// appearing and disappearing, `quick` for small state changes. Springs with/// little or no bounce, and short ease-outs for hover, as Apple's own apps use/// them: fast to start, gentle to land, never in the way of the next click.enum Motion {    static let glide = Animation.spring(response: 0.34, dampingFraction: 0.82)    static let settle = Animation.spring(response: 0.30, dampingFraction: 0.86)    static let quick = Animation.easeOut(duration: 0.14)    static let press = Animation.spring(response: 0.22, dampingFraction: 0.7)}

Questions.

Is it really free?

Yes. Mote is free and open source under the GPL-3.0 license, and all of it is on GitHub.

Why is it so small?

It uses WebKit, the engine that comes with macOS, instead of shipping a copy of its own. Engine updates arrive with macOS.

Will my extensions work?

Most Chrome extensions do, on macOS 15.4 or later. Add them from the Chrome Web Store.

Can I bring my passwords and bookmarks?

Yes, from Chrome, Arc, Dia, Brave or Edge, in one click. Nothing leaves your Mac on the way.

macOS says it can't check Mote for malicious software.

Builds aren't signed with an Apple Developer ID yet. The first time, Control-click Mote in Applications, choose Open, and confirm. After that it opens like any other app.

Which Macs does it run on?

Macs with Apple silicon, on macOS 14 or later.
